Day 236 : Montserrat

Towering peaks of Montserrat
Located 1.5 hour from Barcelona, I took a day trip to Monserrat, where it is well-known as the site of the Benedictine abbey, Saint Maria de Montserrat.
There are a couple of ways to get to Montserrat, which often involves changing from a train to either a cable car or Funicular.  I opted for the Funicular version, and took a train from Placa Espana to a station called Monistral - Central, before changing to the Funicular.

Views from FunicularThe ride was extremely scenic as it passed by the jagged peaks of Montserrat (Montserrat is literally translated as "jagged mountain"), and one could also see the view of the entire city from the ascending funicular ride.
Black Virgin MaryI had a sense of calm the moment I stepped out of the Funicular station, however, I also suddenly felt really small as I was literally standing right in front of a few of the huge mountain jagged peaks surrounding the area.

Montserrat is really easy to navigate.  The main attraction is of course the Sanctuary, with beautiful interiors and sculptures, and the infamous Black Virgin Mary.

Montserrat is also famous for the spectacular views from the various peaks and walking treks.  Being a little lazy and wanting to get back to Barcelona city before sun sets, I took another Funicular (Funicular de Sant Joan) further up the peaks of Montserrat, where I was about 1,000m above sea level.

Unfortunately I was faced with a camera that had an almost dying battery.  It is a frustration especially when the views were amazing, and I had to try on numerous occasions to "cheat" the camera to squeeze extra juice out of the battery to shoot a few extra shots of the landscape.  After spending about 3 hours on Montserrat, I decided to give up on trying to take more pics and decided to call it a day, and headed back down to the Funicular to catch the ride back to Barcelona city.
