Both Frank and I had woken up earlier than the rest and decided check out the beach, since it was too dark when we arrived last night. The beach was just 2 mins walk around the corner.
For all the talk about Varadero’s beach, both Frank and I was disappointed as we both felt that the beach at Santa Maria near Havana city was a lot nicer.
To make it worse, we were told that swimming wasn’t allowed at the beach that day, due to strong tides.
We were shortly joined by Jose and Patricia, and decided to look for a breakfast spot. Finding breakfast was tough in Varadero, as it seems most tourists would stay in hotels, which practices an all-inclusive policy. After walking for about 15 mins, we found one that served a simple breakfast, and was joined by the rest of the group, and to decide what we should do.
The plan was to drive further out and check out another beach which may have a better chance of a swim.
After about 1 hour drive, with a pit stop at a golf course for good views, we stopped at a side road where we were the only 2 cars at an entrance to a cactus park (?!?).
Turns out the beach was just round the side before the entrance to the cactus park, and entering the sea was possible. The beach wasn’t private, but it was next to a hotel which practices an all-inclusive policy with private cabanas and chairs that were exclusive for hotel guests.
Rodolfo negotiated with the staff at the beach bar, where we paid CUC5 per person for the beach chairs and unlimited alcohol drinks – of course that will be pocketed by the hotel staff. We are happy, they are happy, the hotel management would never know, so win-win situation! :)
Each of us must have had about 4 or 5 drinks before we decided to call it a day and head back to town for a very very late lunch (4.30pm) / early dinner.
Bucket list – visiting and swimming in Varadero beach – checked!
