Liege, is another city along the River Meuse, located on the Belgium side.
Our first stop, the main railway station of Liege.
The station is often shown to other engineers involved in city planning and living around the area, as a showcase of the sophisticated engineering used in the construction of the roof of the station, and Pieter wanted to show me the impressive architecture.
It was nice, but perhaps I am used to seeing a lot of modern fancy buildings in Singapore, and asked Pieter if he had seen pictures of the Singapore city, particularly Marina Bay Sands with its boat shaped structure placed on top of 3 towers.
Don’t think Pieter saw that coming!
The train station was located on the other side of the city, so we drove towards downtown to continue our exploration of Liege.
Located in the steep-sided valley of the Meuse, Liege is home to numerous stairways, with the most famous being Montagne de Bueren, a 373 step stairway.
My toes were frozen when we got to the foot of the stairs, as it was a really cold day (though sunny with blue skies). As such, I wasn’t keen on a steep climb outdoors and preferred to head indoors quickly to warm back up.
Views are said to be really good at the top though.
After a good lunch, we made our way through downtown and spotted a waffle shop with long queues.
I wanted to give the Belgian waffles a try, and so Pieter got in the queue and got us a cinnamon flavoured waffle, which seems to be the most popular flavour from the store.
Other key sights we visited in Liege included :
The Cathedral (under renovation), with its gothic designed façade.
Maison de la Science & Zoological Institute
The Old Post Office, a building which had just been sold and in the midst of being revamped and rejuvenated.
Palais of the Prince-Bishops, which now houses the law-court and provincial government.
