Day 10 : Scavengers at Sea

I was still sleeping when I heard the engine of the boat starting up.  Looking at my watch with partially closed eyes, I saw that it was only 6am!  Alberto did inform me the night before that he will be making way the moment he wakes up so as to cover more distance to our destination.

I was still tired so I continued sleeping while the engine churned, and finally decided to wake up at 8am.

The sails were up!  And we got some good wind half way through our journey, hitting 20 knots at some point.  It was great to finally sail instead of relying on the motor.

We finally got to our destination after 11 hours of journey without any stops and decided to anchor for the night at this beautiful sheltered bay, off the coast of Sithonia (40 mins away from Port Panagias where we will be mooring to replenishing water and fuel early next morning).

Alberto decided to go scavenging in the sands for some shellfish, supposedly to be easily found in this bay.  As Alberto only knew the Italian word (sea nochi?) for it, he found one and showed me what to look for.  They looked like the bigger version of cockles!

Sea Nochi

We must have been out in the shallow waters for at least an hour, digging through the sand with our bare hands, and I only managed to find 11.  My nails were filled with dirt by then, and it was sore from all the burrowing.

Alberto did better, and found about 35!  We decided to call it a day, and will continue finding more over the next few days at other bays, as apparently our find is not sufficient for a meal.

We packed our finds into a bag and with one end tied to the railings of the boat, we submerged the bag into the sea to keep the shells fresh till the time when we are ready to eat them!
