Day 13 : Lemnos

After about 6 hours sail cum motoring on the Aegean sea from Mount Athos, we finally arrived at Lemnos

Lemnos Island

Lemnos is a pretty little coastal fishing town.  Located in the Northeast part of Greece, it is said to be the 8th largest island with unspoilt beauty as it is little known (many tourists usually travel to the southern island of Greece).

The port of Myrina is characterised by simple lines of hulls and extended lowlands, and the fortress of Castle Myrina frames part of the landscape of the port when we made our way in.

This is where we will be staying for the night!  As there was no place for us to dock at the marina, we stayed on anchor in the harbour area and took a dinghy to port to do some sightseeing.

Most of the shops were closed when we got in at about 5.30pm, primarily because it was a Saturday.  Some shops were starting to open again, so we decided to come back in again after dinner.

Headed back to “Gaia” to take a swim and shower, and to prepare the Fasolarei for dinner with spaghetti!

Now this is a treat, as I have never encountered this shellfish before and since we only have the Italian name for it, I have no idea what it looks like on the inside.

We put half of our find into a pot of boiling water and in a few moments the shell started to open.  It looked like mussels!

Bowl full of Fasolarei!Fasolarei

I guess Fasolarei must be the Italian name for one of the breed of mussels, as the ones I am more familiar with are the green shelled ones.

Spaghetti was cooked and dinner served!

It was tasty!  And even more gratifying knowing that we had search for these Fasolarei on our own.

There is going to be another day of these shellfish probably for dinner tomorrow night as we still have one more portion kept alive in a pail of seawater!  Yay!

We headed back to the town on a dinghy to do some grocery shopping before returning to the boat to end off our night with some local Greek dessert.

Think I am going to put on more weight with all the good food, especially when there is such a good chef (Captain cum chef Alberto) who takes care of us on board!
