Taking a 3.5hr direct train ride from Strasbourg to Lyon, I made my way to an AirBnB apartment, which John had booked.
John is an ex-colleague from my last company, based out of the UK office. We had communicated over the phone a couple of times and exchanged numerous emails and messages, but we had never met in person.
Interestingly, he had also just tendered his resignation recently and was just waiting out his time before he leaves the company at the end of the month.
I had no plans of travelling to London on this trip, so John decided to meet me in Lyon and explore the city together, since he had never been here before either.
The moment we met, we felt like old friends catching up after not meeting for sometime. It was a very good catching up session and of course a lot of gossiping on things that happened in the company over the last 6 months since I left ~ wow time flies!
The 2-bedroom apartment was well located, being just walking distance to everything we ought to see in Lyon.
Both John and I agreed that Lyon is a surprisingly little city, with beautiful sights one never expected to find.
For example :
1. Roman Amphitheater – Located near the summit of the Fouviere hill, it is not just 1 but 2 located side by side to each other, with a seating capacity of 3,000 (Odeon of Lyon) and 10,000 (Grand Theatre)
2. Basilica with extremely intricate and beautiful interiors
3. Parc Tete D'or - Largest park in France. More unexpected to find an open zoo with variety of animals, and well laid out park.
4. Le Mur des Canuts in Croix Rousse - Largest painted wall in Europe. Croix Rousse was also a nice upper city to wander about the narrow alleyways and stairs (lots of them!)
5. Palace of Justice and unexpected finds of other interesting buildings around the city while exploring new routes
6. Numerous bridges and fantastic night views
We also ate and drank very well during the whole time we were in Lyon. Superb cuisines and great wines!
John and I made a pact that when the Hotel Grand Lyon completes, we will come back to Lyon and book a suite :D
Will be good fun travelling with John again at some point.
