I had not heard of Bacalar prior to this trip. However while travelling over the last few weeks in Mexico, the name came up a number of times with fellow travellers I had met along the way, with strong recommendations to visit.
Located about 40km from Chetumal and just a small detour from Calakmul to Chetumal, I decided to stay 1 night in Bacalar with time to explore in the morning before returning the car, and of course accompanied by Alex and Pau, whom had also expressed interest in visiting Bacalar after hearing numerous stories about the lake too.
By the time we arrived at the hostel Magic Bacalar, it was already pitch dark and we were extremely exhausted.
I woke up early in the morning with hopes to catch the sunrise. As it was cloudy, I had a dramatic view of the magnificent orange hues forming on the edges of the clouds, with the same shades reflected in the still lake.
Opting for a dorm with a lagoon view was an excellent choice. Located just next to the dorm were extension platforms where one could easily jump into the lake. The water was surprisingly warm in the early hours of the morning, and was very shallow with a soft sandy bed.
The beauty of Bacalar is the different shades of water seen in the lagoon, caused by different depths in the lake.
There were a number of tours available, mostly in the form of boat cruises or kayaking in the lake and visiting 3 of the cenotes in the area.
Due to the short time we were there, we drove around the huge lagoon to a couple of excellent viewpoints and visited Cenote Bruja, as recommended by a couple of locals.
Cenote Bruja was very different from all the others which I had been to before – it wasn't enclosed and no cave like structure, and directly connection to the lagoon. While taking a swim in the cenote, we had a few touring speed boats, coming through to see the cenote.
A short while after swimming in the Cenote, I said my goodbyes to both Alex and Pau, as they made their way back to Tulum while I continued my journey to Chetumal to return the car.
