Yuma’s House, Caye Caulker

DSC06917There are a number of hostels available on Caye Caulker, with many which had rather unfavourable reviews online.  Some even indicated had mouse droppings in the rooms, or had seen rats, to others complaining about bed bugs in various hostels.

While searching for options to stay, I came across Yuma's House, which seemed to have only good and no bad reviews. It also mentioned that they are quickly fully booked, so I made it a point to send an email to the hostel to reserve a bed while I am there.

The property is located just next to the San Pedro Belize Express water taxi terminal and had a very welcoming entrance with its brightly litted property, colourful painted walls and blue seats and swings and hammocks in the open area.

Yuma's House

Although located in a fairly high traffic location, it feels safe as there is a night guard on duty and the staff are strict on enforcing a “guests only on property” rule, and have no qualms about asking someone to leave, even if they are waiting for a friend who stays in Yuma's House

Dorm RoomI had a bed in a 4 bedder dorm, which was very comfortable and with good pillows, and was provided with a plush yellow towel upon checking in.

The property is clean and very chill and relaxing. There are many rules to being on the property, though none of which are a problem for me, since I wasn't looking for a party hostel and most of the rules are basic sense.

Upon arriving, Suzanne, the owner of the property, made sure I am aware of the rules of the hostel (I received a list of rules when making a booking, all in the lines of it being a non-party hostel), and even made sure I signed a declaration form, indicating that I agree to abide by the rules.

I found it even more hilarious reading the signs that were in the toilet and showers!

They also seemed rather picky about the clientele that stays with them, as they had turned down a couple of walk-ins, even though there was a spare bed in my room the whole time I was there.

If I haven't helped Martin and Eduardo asked for bed availability with Suzanne, she would had likely turned them down too when walking in.

Despite the restrictions, I strongly recommend the property, for the comfort, safety and chill feel, and suggest writing in early for rooms availability.
