Day 68 : Route to Lanquin

Shuttle17 people were squeezed on a small shuttle generally meant for 15.  I am glad I got in the shuttle early enough to take a seat where I had enough space to stretch out my legs.

The sun is permanently out again, as we took the shuttle from Flores to Lanquin, which took 8.5hrs.

It's the first time I am travelling through the country of Guatemala with good weather, and it was a good thing too.

The roads were windy and views were picturesque. Rolling mountains, open pastures and farmlands filled the scenes as we travelled up and down windy mountainous roads towards our next destination.

There were hardly any modem towns in sight for about 6 hours, with occasional houses or villages dotting the countryside.  We even had to drive onto a barge to cross a river at one point of the trip.

The last 12 km was somewhat of a torture, as it wasn't a proper paved road, but granite rock path, and we had to move at a pace of about 20km/hr.  Just that stretch alone, took us about 45mins to get to our destination.

I had chosen to stay in the centre of Lanquin, a very small town made up of just a few streets.  The sky had already turned dark by the time we got to Lanquin

Some others on the shuttle had accommodation booked at Semuc Champey, which meant another 45 minutes travel on their hotel or hostel provided transportation. Yikes!

I am not a fan of travelling in the night in an unknown country, and also staying in the town centre means that when I leave 2 days later, I wouldn't have to wake up super early to catch my transport out.

Time to get some rest and explore the area tomorrow.
