Chetumal is the capital of Quintana Roo. It is also a point of entry into and out of Mexico by sea, from Belize.
Although it's the capital, it's a very small town, with no major noteworthy attraction.
The only more interesting sight to visit is the Mayan cultural museum (Museo de la Cultura Maya).
This Mayan museum is different from those in other cities, as it contains a number of 3D mocked of various Mayan archaeological sites, giving one a much better view of what the temples once looked like originally.
It also provides information on the Mayan beliefs and their gods, and features a good write up on deciphering the writings and numerical system of the Mayan period.
Very interesting, but confusing. I shall best leave the deciphering to the experts :)
