Day 128 & 129 : Rotterdam

Rotterdam Centre is a much smaller city than Amsterdam, and easily walkable.

Most of Rotterdam was destroyed during the war, so many of the buildings in the city are newly built and some with very interesting architecture, such as the Markthal, a market place with a colourful interior and with apartments built on top of its dome shaped building.

And the Cube Houses, both located around the train station Blaak.

There was also a Saturday market, located next to the Markthal when I was there.

The City Hall is also housed in a really nice building, which was built in 1914.

Adriaan, a local who had stayed in Rotterdam for many years, and whom showed me around the key sights in Rotterdam, also told me that Jackie Chan did a number of scenes from his movie "Who Am I" in the city.

As I relooked at the videos in YouTube, I spotted some of the places I had walked through earlier.

Taking a water taxi ride to the other side of the river is another great way to cover the city.

While on the other side of the river, getting a meal at the Fenix Food Factory or the artsy Posse is highly recommended.

Arriving into Rotterdam on the 1st day of Chinese New Year, and with the city having a number of Chinese whom had settled in the city, the city had a small celebration to embrace the spirit of the festivities, with street stores and performances made available to the public around the small Chinatown, located near the main Centraal Station.

After being away from home for 4.5 months, I had been having cravings for Asian food which I love.  Found a highly recommended dim sum place located in the heart of the city and ordered some of my favourites.

For all things expensive in Europe, dim sum wasn't too badly priced at the Grand Garden Restaurant, and no additional charges for tea or service charge.

The damage, Euro 15.  Taste wise, food was fantastic, and they had a wide selection of dim sum too.  Definitely recommend!

Originally planning to also visit the Hague and Delft from Rotterdam, I didn't have time to fit it in while I was in the city, and will have to find another new opportunity to cover these towns in the future.

Off to Belgium tomorrow! Looking forward to having good Belgium Chocolates :D
