Antigua is my most favourite town in Guatemala. The city is really beautiful, and somewhat reminded me of San Cristobal de las Casas, with its numerous cafes and boutique stores housed in quaint little shop houses.
Not so great for walking, with its cobbled stone roads.
There are a number of beautiful churches in this town.
There are also a lot of artisanal and street markets.
I didn’t spend too much time in Antigua, as the city is small enough to completely explore within 1-2 days.
Volcano Acatenango, Fuego, Agua and Pacaya, can be seen from the city, with a great viewpoint at Cerro de la Cruz, located in the city centre. Some of these volcanoes are still live.
Treks to these volcanoes are popular as a day trip or an overnight stay at the base camp, including seeing the lava boiling from the crater.
As I plan to do a volcano climb in Nicaragua, I didn’t do any of the volcano treks in Antigua.
There are also a number of ruins, most which aren't safe for entry, but with amazing frontages.
One of these ruin had been restored beautifully and contained a number of pristine courtyards and housed a couple of galleries.
It was a more expensive town as compared to others in Guatemala, both in terms of accommodation as well as meals.
However, I did meet a number of travellers, who stayed in Antigua for a couple of weeks to learn Spanish, as private sessions here are really cheap.
