Ometepe is an island formed by two volcanoes (Concepcion and Maderas)rising from Lake Nicaragua, joined by a low isthmus.
Getting to Ometepe requires taking a boat from San Jorge (mainland) to either Mogoyolpa or San Jose.
There are more connections to Moyogalpa and thus made that my arrival point into the island.
The day I arrived in Moyogalpa was Jake's last night at Ometepe, and coincidentally we both were staying at The Landing.
I first met Jake in Valladolid and we travelled a little together in Playa del Carmen. Since we left Playa del Carmen, I had always been just a few days or a city behind Jake, and was glad to finally catch up with him on his last week of his travels.
We spent a couple of hours catching up about our travels over a drink and dinner, and reminiscence on how we smuggled ourselves into pools
On the boat to Moyogalpa, I met Chris, a British who works as a business consultant, but also writes about boxing.
Chris had just came from Managua after watching a boxing match and interviewing one of the competitor.
He had eaten something wrong while in Managua, and wasn't feeling too well, thus decided to also stay in Moyogalpa for the night, at the same hotel, The Landing.
Chris had not made plans for his stay in Ometepe, thus when I moved over to Finca Mystica for my subsequent 2 nights stay, as well as another final night back at The Landing, he decided to tag along with my plans and we became travel buddies during our stay in Ometepe.
Throughout our entire stay, Chris constantly joked that he is just following me around.
In all honesty, I was glad he joined. It wouldn't had been as much fun alone, and we had a lot of great moments together, doing various activities such as :
- Visiting San Ramon Waterfalls
- Kayaking Rio Istian
- Scooting around Ometepe Island and visiting different towns and Aguas de Ojo
Staying in Finca Mystica on my own wouldn't had been as great either - there's a wonderful atmosphere at Finca Mystica, with everyone staying on the property getting together for dinner and conversations.
However everyone was either travelling with family or as a couple when I was there, and having Chris around helped with not feeling as left out.
The only thing we didn't agree on was climbing the volcanos on Ometepe. I was adamant on not climbing any of them before I arrived in Ometepe, as I wasn't keen on trekking for 8 to 10hrs.
After seeing pictures of Jake's 9 hour climb to the summit, I was even more convinced that I shouldn't do it. There was no view as it was covered by clouds, and throughout the whole time I was on Ometepe, I had never seen the peak without any clouds.
Chris eventually self-convinced himself that it was not worth doing. Since there is no view, and as he just barely recovered, he decided he will aim to get well and climb better volcanoes in Guatemala.
I had a better time than expected in the 4 days I was at Ometepe mostly being in good company. Thus, it was with a heavy heart when it was time to say our goodbyes on arrival in the mainland at San Jorge this morning, as Chris made his way to Granada and up north towards Guatemala, while I head over to Rivas and onwards towards Costa Rica.
Safe travels Chris!
