Day 11 : Road Trip in Sithonia, Halkidiki

DSCF1089

We made our way to Ormas Panagias, a port on Sithonia, where we refuelled and filled up the water tank and replenish our food and drink supplies.  This also meant laundry day for us, as we had to be mindful of our water usage on the boat when out at sea!

We subsequently took “Gaia” into the waters near the port, since ferries were expected to be entering the port in the late afternoon.

As we anchored, the winds started getting stronger.  It was a pity that we were not out in the open seas sailing, since we had to pick up the other 2 crew members from Finland from an airport about 1hr drive away.

So we rented a car and made our way to the airport at about 5.30pm.  Sithonia seemed more like one of the other European countryside (farms, open land, factories and minimal tourist attractions) than the other Greek islands we had been to.  As such, I was not too impressed with this island.

After about an hour drive and continuous changing of the radio stations (music stations’ choices of music were really bad!!!) we got to the airport.  This was the first time that I saw prices of things in Greece to be on the more expensive side… car parking for 1hr was Euro 4!

And as we were walking into the airport terminal building, I came across this….

Taxi queue at airportTaxi strike message

When Moa and Tuula (2 Finnish girls) arrived, they were rather thankful that we had rented a car to meet them, otherwise they would have been stuck at the airport after a 12 hour journey!  That would have been a nightmare, since there is hardly anything miles around the airport!

Apparently on the flight to Athens, they were informed on the plane that there was a taxi strike in Athens too, so it seemed that the taxi strike happened throughout most parts of Greece!

We drove back to the port, got on the dinghy and made our way back to “Gaia”, where we decided that we will motor our way back to the bay we were in last night to spend our night.
