We are officially illegal immigrants in Turkey as we are now in the Aeolian coast of Turkey in a bay off Poyraz Adasi.
This is where we will be staying the night as we sailed in from Lesvos to explore a bit of Turkey and try our luck to stay here for the night without being caught and thrown into jail!
Well, not entirely illegal, as we saw a coastguard vessel anchored at one of the bays and made our way towards them to ask for permission to stay for a night.
They definitely didn’t look like coastguards as there were quite a few people on board in different attires, some even in swim gear, and there was a kid too! Nevertheless one of them which seems to be in a military uniform said it was ok, but no passports were stamped!
There were not much to see in this area of Turkey as there were a lot of barren land that were not occupied, except for some holiday houses on one of the islands.
Beaches wise, they were not great. We did see quite a number of boats that seemed to be out on day trips doing some island hopping though.
We decided to take a swim towards one of the shores. While snorkelling, we came across a lot of Fasolarei shells in the seabed, thus Moa and I decided to try our luck to see if we could find some for dinner tonight.
We were in luck! We found some about 3 metres deep in the water, lying atop of the sand bed. We quickly dive in to pick them up and put our finds in a plastic bag we found on shore before heading back to “Gaia”.
We excitedly showed Alberto and Tuula our find, and Alberto asked where we found them. At this point, he took one of them out of the bag and opened the shell. It opened up easily and there was nothing inside!
This was when Alberto told us that live Fasolarei’s usually bury themselves into the sand.
We were suspicious that we would find them on the surface of the sand bed, and thought perhaps Turkish Fasolarei’s are different! haha… We were silly to not have tried opening them up in the 1st place before putting them in the bag, as all the ones we found were already empty!
Well, guess we learn from our mistake!
