Amazing Steak at Even More Amazing Prices

While in Salta, I was told about an amazing happy hour deal in Buenos Aires where everything that is ordered (including steak and wines) is at half price.  The catch is that you need to enter the restaurant between hours of 7pm to 7.30pm and finish eating by 8.30pm.

Both Aliang and I decided to head to La Cabrera Restaurant, a renowned steakhouse in the Palermo area, to see how true the deal is.  So we walked towards Cabrera Road and got to the restaurant just around 7pm.

The restaurant didn’t seem to be ready for meal time yet, so we waited around for about 20 minutes.  As the waiting staff in the restaurant still didn’t seem to be ready anytime soon, Aliang went in to check with the staff – perhaps the information I received had been inaccurate or maybe they don’t have Happy Hours on the weekends.

Turns out that there is another La Cabrera down the street and the happy hour is held there!  One of the waiting staff quickly led us to the other restaurant, and we got in just barely 3 minutes before they closed admissions for the happy hour.  How close!

There was just about 12 tables occupied at that time, and we were asked to quickly order as we were informed that we would need to clear the table by 8.30pm.  So we ordered a 600g rib-eye steak to be shared between the 2 of us, and quickly looked at the wine menu.

Bottle of "Marianne" MalbecIt was definitely much cheaper to order a bottle of wine than 2 glasses of red (a glass of red costs ARS 41 and the cheapest bottle was at ARS 65.  Funny logic!).

So I browsed through the wine menu and chanced upon a bottle of Malbec with my name (the spelling is slightly different as it was spelt as Marianne instead of Maryanne, but nevertheless they are both pronounced the same!), and couldn’t resist ordering it.

Service was fairly fast due to the time that the table setting is suppose to end, so our wine came within 5 minutes, and food arrived around 7.50pm.

HUGE STEAK!  We were also offered a number of free condiments and sides including a salad without additional charge.  Our 600g of ribeye steakFree condiments

We cut off pieces of steak to our individual plates and savoured the taste of the steak hot off the grill… Mmmmhhh… Ideally, we would have preferred to have a little more time to enjoy the food better, but we still had a good meal with amazing wine!

While we were eating, the bill was left on the side of our table.  Up to that point in time, we weren’t very certain if the deal of everything at half price was true, or if it applied only for certain items, and so we looked with caution at the bill.

We were extremely pleasantly surprised as the total bill came up to ARS 127.25!  That’s just approximately S$40 for 2 persons in a top notch grill restaurant in Palermo area.  What a bargain!

People queuing outside La CabreraWe came out of the restaurant after settling our bill and was amazed to find a long line waiting to get a table to order food at the standard prices.

Silly people! Open-mouthed smile
