I was invited to spend the long weekend with Fefu and his friends in El Tigre, in a house they had rented for the summer, and I was told that access is only by boat from the centre of El Tigre with minimal trips (8.30am, 11.30am or 4pm).
I barely made it on to the boat yesterday due to some miscalculated travelling time (which is another story on its own!)
El Tigre is about 45 minutes by train from the Retiro, and only upon reaching El Tigre, did I understand why accessibility to Fefu’s summer house was only by boat.
El Tigre is a huge delta connected by many rivers filled with lots of green and small islands with many rows of houses lining the edge of the islands. I suddenly felt like I was in a totally different world and definitely not a place I would expect to find in Buenos Aires!
The boat ride took slightly over an hour before reaching Arroyo Borroso (the place where I was suppose to disembark), and without much of a numbering system in the area, I was thankful Fefu had provided address and instructions of getting to their place in Spanish, which I had snapped onto my camera and shown to the boat staff (Otherwise I could have probably been stranded somewhere else with my limited Spanish!).
The summer house is named “Loco Loco” (which means “crazy”) and the compound was filled with green, with a long bridge connecting the house to its own floating platform on the river. Lots of nature with extremely crisp air, and a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Spent the next few waking hours with company of Fefu and friends and good laughs, and even went out kayaking at night – a first! It was extremely tranquil and an amazing experience.
We woke up today and decided to relax and try to do some fishing while waiting for a few more of Fefu’s friends who drove their boat to join us for lunch.
I got to experience a traditional Argentinian asado (BBQ), which ended only at about 4.30pm. It was an extremely hearty meal with great company and filled with interesting conversations.
All good things must come to an end, and we quickly packed up before heading back to main land on their friend’s boat, instead of waiting for the irregular public boat.
A perfect way to end off an excellent weekend!
