I took a bus to Cerro Cathedral, in an attempt to do a full day trek to Refugio Frey with plans to subsequently come down on a different route to visit the waterfalls before heading back to the city (route in red in picture).
Cerro Cathedral is where everyone goes skiing during the ski season, and is located about 45 minutes away by bus. I took a walk around Cerro Cathedral, which was mostly shut since ski season is over, before heading over to the start of the trek to Refugio Frey.
The path of Refugio Frey was rather rocky and barely 10 minutes into the trek, my right foot must have rolled over some loose rocks and I felt a sharp pain. Sigh… I have sprained my ankle!
Not sure if it was a good thing or a bad thing, but perhaps it is better that it happened at the early part of the trek rather than mid-way, especially when there were hardly anyone else who seem to be trekking the same route.
I contemplated for a while, deciding if I could still continue the trek up, but after assessing the ankle and considering the time it would take for me to get up and back down again, I thought it would be wiser to head back to rest the ankle, especially if I still intend to travel for the next few months.
I was so looking forward to trek up and see what exactly a Refugio may be and what it has to offer (especially after being told many times about Refugio here in Bariloche) and the view from the top, but I guess I just have to sacrifice this trek.
So I limped back to the bus stop at Cerro Cathedral and waited for the next bus back to town.
Thinking that I probably would not be able to head out to see anymore sights tomorrow, I made my way to the supermarket to buy some groceries for tonight and tomorrow’s meal.
And for the pain I am going through, I headed into Rapanui, a chocolate store which also served freshly made ice cream.
I know it is not the same as heading back to get ice on the foot, but hey, in such situation, a girl’s gotta have her ice-cream!
