I arrived into Casablanca yesterday and it was the 1st time I experience cloudy weather since arriving in Morocco. It got worse towards the evening, such that I wasn’t sure if it was due to the weather or if it was actually dirt or fog.
Casablanca is the largest city of Morocco, and probably made famous by the 1942 romantic movie named after the city. I was expecting more out of this city when I arrive, but it turned out very different to what I expected and everywhere within Casablanca seems to be under construction of some kind.
Other than a small medina (which I still ended up getting lost in!), the only infamous tourist attraction in Casablanca is no doubt the Hassan II Mosque, designed by French architect Michele Pinseau. It is the largest mosque in Africa, and the 3rd largest in the world. It is one of two main mosque in Morocco which is open to non-muslims.
When I arrived at Hassan II Mosque yesterday evening, the tours had already ended for the day, and the next one will take place at 9am in the morning. So I got up early this morning, and quickly made my way over, to catch the start of the tour.
The tour was for 1 hour, and the mosque is HUGE!!! We were told numerous facts about the mosque, some key ones are :
- Took 6 years to build
- 10,000 men working 24/7 shift
- World’s tallest minaret at 210 metres
- Able to hold 20,000 people inside, and another 80,000 outside. There is also a separate section inside the mosque to hold 5,000 women.
- Cost USD60 million (could even be more!) – Top end materials used, the frames for the windows and doors are all made out of titanium, so that it will not rust since it is located next to the sea, marbles were imported from Italy etc.
I would truly recommend anyone in Casablanca to do the Mosque tour as it is really impressive architecturally, and really beautiful inside.
