Dates : 2nd – 3rd September 2011 & 28th February – 3rd March 2012
Highlights :
Transport
The metro is very accessible to most places across Barcelona city. However, people travelling with big and heavy luggage should also bear in mind that many of the metro does not have lifts or escalators, and so one should be prepared to be lugging those luggage along many flights of stairs.
It is definitely cheaper to be buying metro tickets in group of 10 rides vs just 1 ride on its own. However be aware that the card for 10 rides is only valid for up to 6 months.
People
Barcelona is an extremely cosmopolitan city and just walking down the streets of La Rambla alone, one can hear at least 10 different languages being spoken around you. However, the biggest thing I don’t like about the city is actually the customer service levels.
The city is not very customer service oriented. Even staff at the tourist information counter can be rather rude.
Safety
Quite a few people who had been to Barcelona had told me to be careful of pickpockets, as a few of them had been pickpocketed in Barcelona. Perhaps having been to South America and returning to Barcelona for a few more days, I generally felt rather safe in the city and encountered no problems.
Overview
I had people asking me on a few occasions where I would choose to stay if I was given the choice between Madrid and Barcelona.
I love Madrid because of its architecture and just getting lost in the narrow windy streets. However if faced with this option, I would choose Barcelona, because it has much more to offer. There is a great vibe to the city, and it is huge! Lots of things to see and do from visiting the various sites and museums, watching concerts and theatres, nice nature spots and the beach is also near.
It is also always vibrant and it is hard to get bored in a city like Barcelona, where the activity never seems to stop.
Things can be expensive here, but there are also some good deals to be seen around town. Shopping here is amazing though, as both times when I came through Barcelona, there seems to be a sale going on in a number of places, and the array of offerings available is pretty amazing!
Unfortunately, on both times I had to hold back on shopping, as I still had a fair bit of travelling to go and was not able to lug more stuff with me on the road.
Highlights :
