1.5 hour north of Santiago lies Vina del Mar and Valparaiso, which are located side by side each other, about 10 mins apart.
There aren’t much attractions to see in both Valparaiso and Vina del Mar though, however between the two, Vina del Mar is much more pleasant, as Valparaiso is more old and run down.
Rodrigo drove us around Valparaiso, and we went to a hill top where one can get a good view of the coast of Valparaiso and Vina del Mar, before driving off for a seafood lunch at Valparaiso port.
I think the best thing about Chile is getting to eat heaps of seafood at really affordable prices.
We had a sumptuous lunch, where we ordered a plate of mixed seafood (Jardin de Marisco), to be shared among us as starters before commencing our main dish, where I had a grilled fish (recleta), accompanied by Chilean white wine.
The grilled fish was ok, but I much preferred the mixed seafood appetiser.
I also saw for the 1st time pelicans, and they are HUGE! At first I thought they were statues on top of the building, until they started moving.
At later points in the day, I got to see them much closer up, and it was interesting to see them move, especially when they lift their heads up and waddle the big pouch underneath their beaks!
I also got the chance to walk around the coast of Vina del Mar during the day and spent an hour lying on the beach. Didn’t take a dip as heard the water is cold, and the water was brownish.
What surprised me however was that for such a huge ocean in front of us, there was not a single sail boat!
I felt that it is very rare for a place like Vina del Mar, where the living standards and type of people who generally live here are typically the mid to higher class individuals.
