Day 138 : Cusco

Cusco cityCusco is a really pretty city, with stone cobbled roads and an extremely Spanish feel in the main square, due to the numerous Spanish architecture as seen in the balconies and numerous churches (there are 11 churches just around the main square!).

Very pleasant for walking around and spending a few days here.  A very touristy town though as most people who goes to Machu Picchu will highly likely spend a few days here.  It is also the first time I see so many Asians in one location!  Most of them seem to be from Japan or Korea

SaqsaywamanThere are quite a few Inca ruins near Cusco that one could visit and Washuma showed me to one called Saqsaywaman, which is a short walking distance from Cusco city.

Perhaps I didn’t really enter the ruins itself to get a better feel of the place, but from the outside I thought it was just average, or perhaps I have seen many other Inca ruins along the way, and it all looked rather similar after a while.

DSCF2418Headed over to a market for lunch where we had Ceviche, a must try dish in Peru.  It is basically raw fish marinated with lemon and onions.

The meal also came with an aperitif, which is basically made of the marinade for the Ceviche as well as a drink called Chichamorada (juice extract of red corn with pineapple and lemon juice), and a soup.  Was extremely filling!

One of the other first few things I did on my 1st day in Cusco was to book my Machu Picchu and Wayna Picchu ticket, as well as my train ticket to Aguas Calientes. Typically it is recommended to book this many days in advance, but I suppose that it is now the low season and thus even just 2 days before my trip, I was still able to get tickets to Wayna Picchu (there is a limit of 400 people per day to Wayna Picchu).

I was also surprised that there were so many locals offering massage services.  I decided to try out one, since it has been months since I had my last and could really do with one. Fairly cheap (Soles 25.00 approximately S$12) for an hour with hot stones.

Not the best I have had as the technique was a little under par, but it wasn’t too bad.
