Day 26 : Goodbye Gaia

We made our way towards Pythagorio, named after the famous Pythagoras, the father of Mathematics, who came up with the “Pythagoras Theorem” (remember how we studied this in school on finding the length of the side of a triangle? :D).

Apparently he also discovered many other things and was said to be a remarkable man in his time, with a statue dedicated

in honour of him in this town!

Pythagorio was where both Tuula and I disembarked from “Gaia” and said our goodbyes to Rita, Moa and of course not forgetting Alberto, who made my 1st major sailing trip special – On a last count, I must have visited about 13 Greek islands in northern Greece and a day in Turkey over the last 21 days.

It had been such an amazing experience!  Great weather, company, and the food!  We fondly missed Alberto’s pasta while having dinner in Vathy :(

We made our way 20 mins by bus from Pythagorio to Vathy, where we would be staying a night in order to catch our 9 hour ferry ride tomorrow morning back to Athens, and checked into a hotel.  It was nice being back on land again, and especially having hot showers!

We didn’t get to see much of Samos, but between Pythagorio and Vathy, both Tuula and I agreed that we preferred Pythagorio

I also finally managed to get a new pair of sunglasses in Pythagorio as my other pair had been surviving on duct tape over the last few days when it gave way in Mytilini, Lesvos.

So I said goodbye to my trusty pair of sunglasses which had 1st followed me to Nepal… it survived the mountains, but did not survive the seas!

Other Important People of Samos

1. Aristarchus

Born in Samos in 310BC, he is the father of Astronomy, as well as being a mathematician and a philosopher.  He introduced the concept that the sun was the centre of the solar system, and also invented the “skafion”, an artefact measuring the hour of a day, geographic latitude, the daily deviation in the Sun’s orbit, as well as equinoxes all in 281 BC!

He also accounted for the succession of the four seasons as being due to the inclination of the sun’s axis to its elliptical orbit.

2. Themistocles Sofoules

Born in Vathy in 1860, he served four times as Prime Minister of Greece before dying in 1949.
