Malaga is the birth place of Pablo Ruiz Picasso, and his birthplace has since been converted into a Foundation that bears his name.
A four storey building (not including the ground level) built in the 1870s, and where Picasso was born on the first floor of the building. This floor has now been recreated with a 19th Century sitting room-study that gives an idea of what the living quarters were like. The upper floors were not open to public.
On the ground floor, it houses a collection of some of his paintings and art work which he had done.
There is also a separate building, Picasso Museum, which houses a more complete collection of his art work, potteries and other creations. As previously mentioned, I am no art connoisseur, and can only appreciate it from a lay person point of view.
I walked through the gallery with mix feelings, as on one hand, a lot of his art work looked like child’s paintings and it made me wonder how he had actually succeeded in becoming renown with some of the works he did, and there were also some video shots of him creating some art pieces, which seemed like child’s play.
On the other, there were a number of pieces made in very creative ways, and I recalled one prominently that uses fish bones which he had just cleaned from his meal, and taking the bones to create imprints onto a piece of clay in the shape of a bowl, before putting it to fire.
He also seem to have a liking for owls as seen in a lot of his art pieces, and also a strong affinity with women and often prominently depicting the bust areas!
There was also a temporary exhibition area, showcasing the photos taken by a friend of Picasso, giving people like us a good insight to his private life as an artist in his house – his artworks, his family and interaction with kids.
Malaga also has a long beach coastal line near the town centre, and I decided to take a walk to check out the Malagueta beach and grab some lunch at the same time.
It is a decent beach – not necessarily the cleanest, but it has a very long sandy area that is good for lying on the beach, and looks like a good dip for temporary relief in the hot summer weather.
For the guys, you may even see a number of topless girls lazing on the beach!
Headed over to a small beach restaurant for lunch… food was a little pricier, but decided to give myself a little seafood treat.
I think I preferred the sardines and seafood meal we had in Greece and it was definitely soooo much cheaper in Greece!
