Day 147 : Huacachina

HuacachinaEver seen a real oasis in the middle of the desert?  This is what Huacachina boasts to have.

So after walking 5km from Ica to Huacachina, we (Pablo, Krissia, Aleksi, Nathalie) found ourselves surrounded by sand dunes, and it certainly felt like we were in the desert as we continued walking under the hot sun, and soon came to a place with shaded trees and water in a distance.  What a relief!

Not quite the oasis I imagined to see, as it was very much beautified and looked rather artificial with the modern buildings around it.  But we learn from Krissia that this is indeed a natural oasis.  Of course the water level has reduced over the years and so water is pumped in regularly to keep the “pond-like” size in the centre.

With the huge sand dunes surrounding it, there were of course offerings of sand boarding and buggy rides, and for a moment, it felt like deja-vu – it was almost a week after my ankle sprain in Bariloche that I went to visit the sand dunes and for the sand boarding experience in San Pedro de Atacama, and it is also about a week since I last sprained my ankle in Machu Picchu.  The only difference this time round was that I didn’t do sand boarding here, but just climbed up the sand dunes to take some pictures.

As usual, the climb was rather exhausting, and my shoes were filled with sand with each step I took.  Definitely worth it though, as one could see a better overview of the oasis from the top.

A real oasis in the desert

RaspadillaAnd to cool off after being in the hot mid-afternoon sun, a Raspadilla drink.

Similar to our ice kachang, but without the “kachang”, it was basically crushed ice with sweet coloured flavourings.  Yum!
