I decided to head into the Historico Centro today again to explore some of the few places which I have yet to cover, including the Iglesia de la Compania, Calle de la Ronda and the Basilica.
While in the Historico Centro, I noted that there was a lot of activity in the main square, with lots of camera crew standing in various parts of the square. Thinking that there must be something big happening, I decided to hang around and wait.
Within less than half an hour, the President appeared at the patio of the Presidential House and waved to the crowd. People started cheering and in the background there was voiceover which announced that there were also other diplomatic guests from other countries, including the Colombian Prime Minister.
In commemeration of his visit, there was a big parade of the Ecuadorian army (both on foot and on horses) parading in the main square area, as well as a big band playing and marching around the front of the square.
The whole process lasted for about 40 minutes before the President waved goodbye and the rest of the foreign diplomats made their way inside the building. A definitely rare sight and an amazing experience!
