Day 72 : Historic City & Boat Trip

Got a lift from Matheus to the bus terminal on his buggy (he had a busy day yesterday replacing his battery and fixing up the buggy!), where I was supposed to meet Aliang at 9am.  Matheus suggested that we walk around the historic centre of Paraty and take a leisurely boat trip to visit some of the islands.

View of Port

So we walked towards the port and just as we got there, one of the boats was about to depart.  We quickly hopped on after understanding the route the boat was taking and we were also pleasantly surprised that the cost of the 5hr boat trip wasn’t exorbitantly priced for a touristic town like Paraty

The next 5 hours was spent cruising past private islands and enjoying the sea breeze.  We stopped off at a couple of bays as well as 2 beaches for a swim, and throughout the whole time, we were lucky that we had extremely wonderful weather and managed to take some amazing pictures.

Also had a good lunch on board the boat – Fish with rice. Even the rice is shaped as a fish!

We got back to shore at about 3.15pm and decided to walk around the Historic Centre, which is a key highlight of Paraty

Enclosed in an area surrounded by the port and river, the Historic Centre is made up of rows of houses and shops with multi-coloured doors and cobbled pathways.  Many shops were also in this area, selling souvenirs, liquor, decor and artefacts, clothes and many other things.

Aliang bumped into Amy (a fellow traveller which he got to know while in Rio) when we were walking around the Historic Centre, and so we spent the next few hours chatting and exploring the little town together, before parting ways.

We headed over to Matheus’ work place to pick up his house keys before heading to the bus terminal to catch the bus back home.  It was then we realised we had missed the 7.10pm bus and the next bus doesn’t come till about 10.35pm!  What irregular bus schedule!

Not wanting to wait, we went back to Matheus’ work place to ask for directions to walk back to his place, and he reckoned that the walk would take us about 1 hour.  So we started walking and decided that once we got to the main highway, we will try to hitchhike (my first time hitchhiking!).

Luck must be on our side, as we managed to stop the 1st car that went past us, and by some strange coincidence, she turned out to be Matheus’ neighbour!
