Day 80 : Iguaçu Falls – Argentina Side

It’s another nice perfect and hot day, as I pack my bags and get ready to head to the Argentina side of the Iguaçu Falls, before being dropped off at the hostel in Puerto Iguaçu (Argentina).  A group of 11 of us from the hostel were going there today, and Iguaçu Falls is one place which is not so enjoyable when visiting alone, especially when there are so many good photo opportunities!

Map of the fallsWe arrived at the Cataratas Del Iguaçu (Waterfalls of Iguaçu in Spanish) at about 10.30am and spent the whole day here (in contrast to just about 4 hours on Brazil side).  The longer duration on the Argentina side was mainly due to the waiting time for the trains which when added up could be as long as 2 hours.  There were also 3 different trails one must explore in this place (vs. only 1 main trail on Brazil side).

In addition, we also took the jungle + boat ride on the Argentina side which took approximately 1.5hour to complete.

When we arrived at the entrance, we were told that the water level is rising and they were unsure if the path would be passable in the afternoon, and thus we first headed to the Devil’s Throat, which could only be reached by train.  When we got to the queue for the train, there was already a long queue, possibly since everyone wanted to be sure that they could see the Devil’s Throat, before the path becomes impassable.

While waiting for the train, we saw a group of priests.  They stood out not just because of their attire, but also they were carrying the statue of Virgin Mary with them!  Some of the people in the group whom I was with had seem them on the Brazil side of the falls yesterday too!

Apparently I was told that this was a form of procession, where these priests will travel around the world wearing the same uniform daily, and carrying the statue of Virgin Mary with them!

When we finally got to Devil’s Throat, it was CROWDED!  There was no good spots to take pictures without being blocked by human traffic.  I also personally felt that for the 2 different Devil’s Throat on both Brazil and Argentina side, I preferred the Brazil side.

Devil's Throat

We headed to the Upper Trail next and practically had to rush through this section within 30 mins in order to make it in time for our jungle + boat ride.  The views here were much more amazing than Devil’s Throat though!

We rushed over to the gathering point for the start of our “Great Adventure” – the official name for the jungle + boat ride.  The jungle ride was about a 45 mins trip through the woods in a big jeep which subsequently brought us to where we could board the boat.  I personally thought the jungle trip wasn’t great.

The boat ride on the other hand was the fun part of the trip and worth an experience although the price is a killer even though it was supposedly cheaper than the Brazil side (I was hesitant on wanting to do this as it was rather expensive but as the rest was doing it, I didn’t want to feel left out!).  It lasted for only about 15 minutes, but brought us very close to the bottom of the falls, and we got soaking wet!  This is also where I saw one of the most beautiful rainbow ever seen!

The end of the boat ride left us at the foot of the Lower Trail which gave us a much more spectacular view of the falls as compared to the Devil’s Throat and Upper Trail combined.  Also got to capture good shots of the waterfall and rainbow combined which was absolutely beautiful.

For views, I personally preferred the Brazil side as you get to see the falls in its entirety and the walking trail is more pleasant since it was less crowded and facilitated photo taking.

However, it was in Argentina that I saw the most amazing rainbow ever!  You also get a closer view of the waterfall and the force the waterfall can exude on the Argentinian side.
